Suzanne Sowinski, Director of Sustainable Building at Sowinski Sullivan Architects, spoke at the Ninth International Healthy Building Conference sponsored by Syracuse University and the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Environmental and Energy Systems on September 15, 2009. The conference consisted of leaders in Air Quality and Climate research from around the world. It showcased research, demonstrations, and innovation projects conducted by her green building colleagues from every corner of the globe. Ms. Sowinski’s white paper “Understanding the Relationship between Building Materials and Indoor Air Quality”, was accepted by the committee, and she presented it during the Sustainable & Green Building portion of the conference. Her presentation outlined health problems associated with material off-gassing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) inside our homes and buildings. She used a one of the firm’s LEED projects in Morristown , NJ to demonstrate, how common materials used to control the moisture inside building walls can lead to increase in VOCs inside the interior of the building.
